Salpausselkä UNESCO Global Geopark

Salpausselkä UNESCO Global Geopark tells the story of the best-known geological entity of Finland. It is situated in the Lahti region in southern Finland and it consists of the area of six municipalities in Päijät-Häme: Lahti, Hollola, Heinola, Asikkala, Sysmä and Padasjoki.
The First and Second Salpausselkä are unique ice-marginal formations laid down by ancient meltwater streams at the end of the Ice Age. They reach across the entirety of southern Finland and are at their most spectacular in the area of Salpausselkä Geopark. Here they are joined to eskers of international value, such as the picturesque Kelvenne Island and Pulkkilanharju Esker in Päijänne National Park.

Lake Päijänne

Lake Päijänne is the second largest lake in Finland. Lake Päijänne basin starts from Lake Vesijärvi in Lahti and continues north as far as the city of Jyväskylä. The water area is divided into the municipalities of Jyväskylä, Toivakka, Muurame, Jämsä, Luhanka, Kuhmoinen, Sysmä, Padasjoki and Asikkala. Altogether the lake covers an area of 1 118 km2. The largest open bodies of water in the lake are “Asikkalanselkä”, “Tehinselkä” and “Judinsalonselkä” in the southern part and “Vanhanselkä” and “Ristinselkä” in the northern part. The largest islands in the southern part are Virmailansaari (situated in Padasjoki) and Salonsaari (situated in Asikkala). You get to Lake Päijänne from Lake Vesijärvi via Vääksy Canal and from Lake Päijänne to Lake Ruotsalainen via Kalkkinen Canal.
A treat for nature tourists, Päijänne National Park is located in southern Lake Päijänne and contains steep rocks, sandy eskers, isolated lagoons and small islets. Sightseeing spots on land you can find Päijätsalo lookout towers or Kullasvuori lookout towers close to Padasjoki marina.

Vellamo’s herbal sauna for small groups and families

During the program, you’ll take a slow walk into a nearby forest with professional guide, where you will gather herbs for our foot-baths as well as tree branches for our personal energising power whisks. You will learn about the importance of nature in Finnish culture, Finnish
folklore as well as herbal medicine and the powers of herbs and plants. After returning to the hotel/cabin, you will learn about sauna etiquette and the effects of the sauna.

You will start aromatic herbal sauna with facial masks and foot-baths. The traditional sauna healer will guide you through the sauna session. Afterwards you’ll feel relaxed and as if you were born again!

Kelvenne Trail

The Kelvenne Trail passes through the Päijänne National Park, taking walkers from beautiful sandy beaches to peaceful forests and tops of high eskers. It’s an easy-to-follow path with lovely views. Kelvenne is an esker island formed during the Ice Age, and effects of the Ice Age can also be seen in the eskers, kettle holes and sheltered bays. The start and end points of the Kelvenne trail are in the south of the island (Kirkkosalmi) and in the north (Likolahti), and the trail can be walked in either direction. The trail passes through the entire island, winding along beaches as well as high eskers. The total lenght of the trail is 9 km.
Kelvenne Island can be reached either by scheduled boat, taxi boat or by kayaking.

Fully renovated country house built in the 30s is the perfect romantic get away! Here you can really feel the atmosphere of an old house.

Päijänne National Park

The pristine waters of Lake Päijänne wash the sandy shores of a chain of islands formed by an esker ridge that dates back to the Ice Age. Take a boat trip or rent a kayak and explore the park’s many islands and their sandy coves and rocky shores. The nature trail at Pulkkilanharju ridge, accessible by road, also offers fine lakekand views. Look out for ospreys soaring over the lake.

In nature conservation areas, everyman’s rights do not apply in the normal way. Please always check the rules of the destination before making your trip. National parks are nature reserves, whose key task is to safeguard biodiversity and enable people to enjoy and relax in nature on the terms of nature conservation.
All national parks in Finland are managed by Metsähallitus.

Watersport and Outdoor Activities

Jannen Kalastus ja Kayakki offers kayak, canoe, SUP board rentals and transport services in the Lahti, Vääksy and Padasjoki areas. Paddle to Päijänne National Park and spend the night on one of its largest islands, Kelvenne, or take a kayaking day trip and enjoy outdoor barbecue at the nearby Pernasaari.

We offer a selection of SUP boards, kayaks, canoes and additional services. Our friendly staff is glad to assist you. Our shop in Vääksy is located right by the water only 200 metres from the beach.

For larger groups, please contact us in advance to ensure that there is enough equipment available. It’s best to book 3–40 days in advance so that we can make sure that to get you exactly the equipment you want.

Paddling is one of the most memorable and wonderful ways to spend a summer day and offers a great chance to admire the beautiful Finnish nature! Gather your friends and family and embark on a trip of the waterways of Asikkala. Make a day trip kayaking around Salonsaari Island or take a paddle in Päijänne National Park and Kelvenne island and enjoy the breathtaking natural landscape. Taking due care of safety, you can also paddle across the Vääksy canal to Lake Vesijärvi, which is 3 metres higher than Vesijärvi.

The nearby Pernasaari island is located 2.5 kilometres from the beach and it features a designated municipal area for recreational use. Close to this is also offered a beautiful and shorter river route.

Lahti Museum of Visual Arts Malva

Malva is a new museum full of art, design, posters and culture in Lahti, less than a 50-minute trip from Helsinki.

Lahti Museum of Visual Arts Malva locates in Malski, an old brewery building from 1912 in Lahti city centre. Malva’s exhibitions, Malski’s restaurant world, conference center and colourful museum shop form an entity which is unique in the whole Finland.

Laune Family Park

Laune Family Park – a favorite destination for families with children!
Laune Family Park is all time favorite! Numerous slides, climbing frames and children´s traffic park offer nice things to do for the whole family. The park is located only two kilometers from the center of Lahti. Free entrance.

The Family Park is open always, but certain equipment and services are limited in use.

Seasonal play equipment is available if possible: from August to the end of May, Mon-Thurs from 9 am to 3 pm and Friday from 9 am to 2 pm.
The toilets are open Mon-Thurs 9am-3pm and Friday 9am-2pm. On public holidays, the toilets are closed. The toilets are also closed from 27-31 December.

Lemmenharju nature trail in Vierumäki

Lemmenharju nature trail near the Sports Institute of Finland in Vierumäki is one of the most charming attractions of the Salpausselkä Geopark. The trail travels on top of steep ridges and follows the shores of clear-watered little lakes.
The trail consists of Suurharju scenic trail and a walk around Lake Ahvenlampi. The Suurharju scenic trail alone is 2.4 kilometres long, and the total length of both parts is 4 kilometres. The trail starts from the north side of the main building (Kaskela) of the Sports Institute, down by sparkling Lake Valkjärvi that reflects a green landscape.
Lemmenharju nature trail can be walked clockwise or anticlockwise, following the painted orange markings in the trees. Two campfire sites are provided at the shore of Lake Valkjärvi, and there are benches for resting along the trail. It is also possible to take a swim beside the nature trail at the swimming spot of Lake Valkjärvi or at the beaches of Lake Saarijärvi and Lake Suurijärvi.

Finnish Motorcycle Museum

Finland’s only Motorcycle museum holds up to 100 motorcycles and properties related on motorcycling. Our collection offers a wide range of elegantly restored world-famous motorcycles and national racebikes and mopeds with their stories. Exhibitions change annually.

Museum stands out of traditional museums with its youthfullness and rock’n roll spirit.

Viewing deck at the Ski Jumping Tower

High on the hill, take the elevator to the top and enjoy the panoramic views from the observation deck of Lahti’s tallest ski jumping tower – the historic site of multiple Nordic Championships and World Cup events in Salpausselkä UNESCO geopark.
Open daily in the summer (and the rest of the year by reservation), the observation deck overlooks Lahti Sport Center with its open air swimming pool, the city of Lahti, Lake Vesijärvi and the abundant nature of the region. During the summer, you can also make a round trip on the ski-lift just like the jumpers do.

Yes, ski jumpers also train in the summer – you may get lucky and see a jumper taking flight!

The viewing deck is open to the public daily from June 1 – August 31st with the exception of the Finnish Midsummer holiday. Beyond the summer, the deck can only be visited with a reservation for your private group.

Boat trip Lahti-Heinola-Lahti

Two canal route

A fascinating cruise route on southern Lake Päijänne: two canals and three different lakes. The return journey is made 4 days in a week from June to September. Good coach connections. Travel in one direction by scheduled coach and in the other way by ship. There is a restaurant and café on board.

Idyllic Old Vääksy Village

The beautiful Vääksy Canal milieu has fascinated with its beauty throughout the century. Head for a walk in the canal park or admire the natural beauty of Vääksynjoki river. It is fascinating to follow the boats and ships floating in the canal and through the lock.

By Vääksyntie road and canal you can find many lovely boutiques. Finnish food souveniers you can buy from Vääksyn Mylly mill.

When hungry, head to for example Majakkapaviljonki pavilion by the canal. From the pavilion opens a great view over Lake Päijänne. Or try Kanavan Panimo brewery’s summer restaurant or Kanavan Kruunu, both by the canal. For a coffee break we recommend for example Kanavan helmi or Ranskalainen kyläkauppa.

For sightseeing Päijännetalo is a must place to visit. It is a free time fishing museum offering a great overview of sweet water fishing and presenting the history of Lauri Rapala, the man behind the famous Rapala lures. By the canal you can find also Vesimyllymuseo – water mill museum and several summer arts exhibitions. Norrlin Park, by Vääksynjoki river, gives a good and easy opportunity to enjoy nature and to relax for a while.

A good idea is to hop on a lake cruise boat from Lahti and travel to Vääksy canal by water. Päijänne-Risteilyt Hilden’s boat on the route Lahti-Heinola stop also at Vääksy. You can spend the day in Vääksy and then take a local bus back to Lahti.

Lahti Harbour – Living room of Lahti

The Lahti harbour area is all year around a mix of cosy restaurants and cafés, small boutiques, design and modern architecture. Explore modern Wood Architecture of Sibelius Hall and visit Lanu Sculpture Park when visiting the area.

In summer season lunch and day cruises start from Lahti harbour in Lake Vesijärvi.

Pikku-Vesijärvi Park is a green oasis just outside the city center. It provides a wonderful venue for fitness events,pop ups, small music festivals and exercise for example. There is a musical fountain, outdoor exercise equipment, grass fields and a one-kilometer long footpath in the park.

Local Craft Centre Taitokortteli

Taitokortteli is a cultural centre located in the heart of Joensuu. Over the years, Taitokortteli has become a centre for local and visitor craft professionals and enthusiasts. The services it provides include its stores, café and various craft services. Additionally, Taitokortteli hosts several events and exhibitions throughout the year. The cosy atmosphere of the old wooden buildings invites you to spend time in this cultural centre all year round and experience a unique environment.

Joensuu Art Museum Onni

The Onni Art Museum’s permanent exhibitions feature the museum’s diverse Art Collections throughout the year. In addition, there are changing exhibitions on the ground floor of the museum, which focus on current phenomena in Finnish and international visual art. The art museum is located right in the center of Joensuu, close to the market square. Completed in 1894, the impressive museum building is a former lyceum.

The Museum’s permanent exhibitions include three international collections. One showcases art from different periods of Chinese culture, another includes art and artifacts from Ancient Greece and Rome, while the third includes Catholic art from 14th to 18th Century Central and Southern Europe. The Museum’s collection of icons provides a glimpse of the Orthodox culture characteristic in Eastern Finland and the Finnish exhibitions take visitors to a tour from the Golden Age of Finnish art all the way to modern art.

Kuhasalo Nature Trail

The Kuhasalo nature trail is located near the center of Joensuu, about three kilometers from the market square. There are two unobstructed nature trails: one and two kilometers long. Kuhasalo, also known as Kukkosensaari, is a historically significant place and there is a monument to the wilderness monastery.

The trails run mostly along the lakeside with a beautiful view to lake Pyhäselkä. There are six campfire sites and two rental grilling huts: Kalmonkatiska and Kuhamaja. There is maintenance with firewood at the campfire sites. In summer the landscape is maintained by sheep that can be admired at the beginning of the trail.

In summer, the Jyväskylä harbour transforms into a point of recreation for the city dwellers of all ages. The harbour, located in the immediate vicinity of the city centre and the Travel Centre attracts people to enjoy sunny summer days, fun activities and varied treats to eat.

The Jyväskylä Harbour, the northernmost passenger harbour on Lake Päijänne, is the starting point for several different cruises. From Jyväskylä you can comfortably sail to Lahti, Jämsä, Suolahti, Laukaa and Viitasaari, for example. A cruise is an excellent way of experiencing the scenery on Lake Päijänne while enjoying the delicious buffets on the cruise boats.

You can also take off from the harbour on a floating sauna. In between sauna baths, it is fun to dip into the refreshing lake water to cool off. Or enjoy the lake sceneries by renting a Houseboat, which is sure to be a memorable experience! If you are looking for excitement, you can hop aboard a water jet or test the ferocious-looking flyboards.

A stone’s throw from the harbour is unique opportunity to race along the water surface on a wakeboard or rent SUP boards.

In the harbour, there are activities for every taste! The Rantaraitti recreational route in Jyväskylä is the biggest outdoor gym in Finland. The route takes you round the Jyväsjärvi lake. The 13 kilometre route provides changing landscapes in different neighbourhoods in Jyväskylä.

The large green space in the harbour offers a good ground for cosy lounging and having picnics. In addition to your picnic, you can indulge your taste buds at many restaurants in the area.

The Lutakko Square located by the harbour is famous for music. The range of events and festivals on the Lutakko Square is wide, from the large Rally Finland and Suomipop to smaller events.

The Jyväskylä Lutakko Harbour offers a lot to do even in winter.
Visiting craft can take on fuel and drinking water – as well as empty their septic tank and bilge – at the service jetty.

Harju Ridge & Vesilinna Observation Tower

The Harju ridge is a pine forest ridge formation in the middle of the city of Jyväskylä and the Vesilinna with its observation tower on the top of the ridge is a recognisable landmark that can be seen everywhere the city. Harju is also a year-round area for outdoor activities and recreation for the city dwellers, a soothing green oasis right next to the city centre. The Vesilinna Observation Tower houses the Natural History Museum and a café-restaurant. The observation tower is always open during the opening hours of the Vesilinna Cafe & Restaurant. It is recommended to check the opening times of the Vesilinna Cafe & Restaurant website before the visit.

The Nero Stairs that ascend to the top of the ridge are one of Jyväskylä’s more picturesque sights. The robust stairs, whose foot is at the edge of the city centre, were built as an unemployment relief project in 1925. The name of the stairs derives from the municipal engineer of the day, Oskar Nero.

In restaurant Tampella you can enjoy delicious food prepared of fresh ingredients in a charming milieu! For us the atmosphere is an essential part of dining experiment and our charming staff together with our nostalgic surroundings make Tampella an easily approachable and intriguing dining place in the middle of the town’s most valued area.

Tampella is known for its seasonably changing menu where you can find classics such as pepper steak or French toasts, but also innovative new dishes or new interpretations. You can taste the season in our dishes and also the passion and love for the food. Siipiweikot Tampella

Second Siipiweikot restaurant opened in Tampere in the spring of 2019 when our Aleksanterinkatu restaurant could no longer meet the increased hot wing hunger in Tampere. Tampella is decorated with fresh, good and warm atmosphere. We have a large bright-glazed terrace that quarantees warm and beautiful hot wing experiences from early sunny spring until late autumn.

Museum Centre Vapriikki

With a picturesque location beside the Tammerkoski rapids, Vapriikki is a museum centre that offers things to see and do for the whole family. We host about a dozen exhibitions each year, with varied themes, including history, technology, and natural sciences.

Vapriikki is also home to the Natural History Museum of Tampere, the Media Museum Rupriikki, the Mineral Museum, the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame, Postal Museum and The Finnish Museum of Games. Our visitors are served by museum restaurant Valssi and the Vapriikki museum shop, which offers a wide selection of books, gifts, and souvenirs.

Pispala

Pispala is perhaps the most beautiful part of Tampere: colourful wooden houses scattered all over the steep ridge with roads, gardens and stairways snaking in between. Enjoy the view down from the ridge to the lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi, or take in the whole Pispala ridge from the southern lake. In Pispala you can find e.g. a museum for the Finnish writer Lauri Viita, Rajaportti, the oldest public sauna still in use, Café Pispala and Pispalan Pulteri restaurant.

Pyynikki Observation Tower and Café

Located on the world’s largest gravel ridge, the 26-meter-tall red granite tower was opened in 1929 on the 150th anniversary of Tampere City. Magnificent views over Tampere and its surroundings open from the top of the tower and it continues to be one of the most popular local sights.

On the ground level there is a famous cafeteria where they make unique doughnuts or ‘munkki’ (in Finnish), which are known all over Finland and many say they are the best in the country.

The tower and the café are open every day of the year from 9 am ’til 8 pm (9 pm in the summertime). Only on Midsummer Eve and on Christmas Eve they close earlier, at 4 pm. The admission up to the tower is merely 2 € for adults and 1 € for children between 4 and 15 years.

Näsinneula Observation Tower

The peak of the second highest observation tower in the Nordic countries reaches 168 meters. You can see breathtaking views from the observation deck or the revolving Restaurant Näsinneula.

Särkänniemi Theme Park

Särkänniemi Theme Park located by the gorgeous Lake Näsijärvi in Tampere consists of four attractions: Amusement Park, Doghill Fairytale Farm, Näsinneula Observation Tower and Aquarium. Amusement Park and Doghill Fairytale Farm are open only seasonally, but Näsinneula Observation Tower and Aquarium are open year round. Särkänniemi Amusement Park has more than 30 rides for everyone’s taste. With Särkänniemi Pass (available during the summer season) you get unlimited access to all the attractions and rides.

World’s Only Moomin Museum

The Moomin Museum is an experiential art museum for Moomin fans and art lovers of all ages. Visit us and relive the adventures of the beloved Moomin family in our permanent exhibition of Tove Jansson’s original illustrations. Welcome to our cozy café, where you can indulge in fresh and delicious flavors. Almost all of our café’s products feature ingredients sourced directly from our own farm, such as fava beans and various meats with a rotating selection. All the coffee products we sell and prepare in the café are made from our farm’s own coffee, carefully cultivated and ground exclusively in Tiirinkoski.

We are one of the Hämeenlinna’s most famous waffle café. Our waffles are made from our farm’s own fava beans, and we encourage you to try both sweet and savory waffle varieties – they are truly delightful!

Traditional Public Sauna by the Lake Ahvenisto

This traditional public sauna by the lake Ahvenisto is located in the city of Hämeenlinna. Lake Ahvenisto is known for its pristine waters and beautiful sceneries. It is the perfect way to relax after a fun and adventurous day in one of Ahvenisto’s top three activity spots: the Flowpark adventure park, nature trail of Ahvenisto and public open air swimming pool. The sauna can be booked online.

Café Ahvenisto

Café Ahvenisto in Ahvenisto Activity Park, Hämeenlinna, offers a wide variety of typical coffeehouse products. Our speciality is an Italian style artesan gelato ice-cream, made in Finland. Café Ahvenisto also sells tickets to the Ahvenisto pool and Flowpark Adventure Park. You can also rent SUP-boards from us.

Tiirinkoski Factory

Located in Hämeenlinna, the Tiirinkoski factory exudes a warm atmosphere and boasts a stunning setting. Housed in a barn building constructed in 1910, this lifestyle-style store and cafe offer mouthwatering Belgian waffles made from the farm’s own pea flour.

Tiirinkoski has a long history of farming, and currently, the farm raises native Åland sheep, Gotland sheep, and Highland cattle. In addition to growing grain, the farm also cultivates peas. Apart from grain and pea products, Tiirinkoski sells lamb and beef products from its own livestock.

Visitors can relish in the delights of the cafe, shop for interior decor items, clothing, and even their own sheepskins, yarns, and food products at the store. Tiirinkoski farm is definitely worth a visit, even from afar!

Cable wakeboarding in Hämeenlinna

Cable wakeboarding is a watersport where you are towed on waterboard in a cable track assisted by an electric motor.

Wakeboarding is suitable for all ages. The sport is also a great choice if you are organizing a workplace recreation day, a bachelor party or even a birthday!

You should make a reservation to confirm the time for the cable. Prices from €25/hour/person. (For larger groups, reservations by phone or e-mail.) You should arrive at the place about 15 minutes before the class starts. You only need a towel and a swimsuit, other equipment (board, wet suit, helmet and safety vest) you can rent from us if you want.

Ahvenisto Outdoor and Nature Reserve

Ahvenisto Ridge area is a popular outdoor district in Hämeenlinna. At its core is the 64-hectare nature reserve, of which six hectares are primeval forests. There are many marked exercise and outdoor trails, a sawdust track and forest paths in the area. Rare vegetation can be seen in Ahvenisto. Häme pasque flower, wich is the county flower of Häme, grows in the area.

Lake Ahvenisto is a popular place for swimming. In winter you can go ice swimming. The Ahvenisto sauna can be rented by anyone and there are also general sauna shifts. Ahvenisto also has an outdoor swimming pool built for the 1952 Olympics’ modern pentathlon swimming section. Other pentathlon competitions were also competed in Ahvenisto. There is a small Kahtoilampi bond on the other side of the Ahvenisto Ridge and on further north Hirvilampi bond.

In addition to swimming and jogging, you can play beach volley, go SUP boarding or climb in the trees of Flow Park tracks. There is a hut near the beach where you can light a campfire. During the summer there is a cafe near the beach.

In winter, there are skiing trails and several toboggan slides in Ahvenisto.
