    Day 1

Many of the destinations in Salpausselkä UNESCO Geopark are easily reachable with your own car.

While many visitors briefly drive through the well-known landscape destination of Pulkkilanharju crossing the Lake Päijänne, the esker has much more to offer when explored on the local nature trail. https://visitlahti.fi/en/frontpage/salpausselka-geopark/

Besides Pulkkilanharju, there are other fantastic destinations in the Salpausselkä UNESCO Geopark that can enhance your car trip experience in the area. For a more in-depth exploration combined with physical activity, consider biking or trail running on the area’s extensive hiking routes.

The Salpausselkä routes start near the center of Lahti, at the sports center, where you can find services including a restaurant, museum, and ski observation tower.

In Vierumäki, you’ll find the Lemmenharju nature trail, and in addition, Vierumäki offers a wealth of opportunities to explore nature through cycling, running, hiking, skiing, paddleboarding, and more. Vierumäki also offers various levels of accommodation, from cottages to hotels, restaurants, spas, a swimming hall, and the opportunity to engage in almost any sport.

    Day 2

If you plan to stay overnight in the area, you can find excellent accommodation options in Lahti, Heinola, Asikkala, Padasjoki, and Sysmä.

If the weather is favorable, warm and sunny, we highly recommend spending a day on Kelvenne Island. It is the most famous and popular destination, known for its eight-kilometer-long esker island featuring lagoon-like sandy beaches and self-serviceharbours. During the summer, you can join cruises to Kelvenne departing from Padasjoki harbour. Additionally, boat taxis offer swift transportation to the islands from various points, including Padasjoki and Lehmonkärki in Asikkala

Another good option is Päijät-Salo and Kammiovuori in Sysmä. Päijätsalo, situated on the eastern shore of Lake Päijänne, is a rugged island with a rocky peak. This rocky summit, a relic of a folded mountain range nearly two billion years old, rises 85 meters above the surface of Lake Päijänne.

Kammiovuori, also known as Sysmä’s highest point, is Southern Finland’s second-highest peak and a perfect day trip destination. It offers a four-kilometer marked trail, a picturesque lean-to with a designed campfire area, and natural attractions. The trail, though challenging, features rocky and steep sections with tree roots and stumps.
