Lake Päijänne

Lake Päijänne is the second largest lake in Finland. Lake Päijänne basin starts from Lake Vesijärvi in Lahti and continues north as far as the city of Jyväskylä. The water area is divided into the municipalities of Jyväskylä, Toivakka, Muurame, Jämsä, Luhanka, Kuhmoinen, Sysmä, Padasjoki and Asikkala. Altogether the lake covers an area of 1 118 km2. The largest open bodies of water in the lake are “Asikkalanselkä”, “Tehinselkä” and “Judinsalonselkä” in the southern part and “Vanhanselkä” and “Ristinselkä” in the northern part. The largest islands in the southern part are Virmailansaari (situated in Padasjoki) and Salonsaari (situated in Asikkala). You get to Lake Päijänne from Lake Vesijärvi via Vääksy Canal and from Lake Päijänne to Lake Ruotsalainen via Kalkkinen Canal.
A treat for nature tourists, Päijänne National Park is located in southern Lake Päijänne and contains steep rocks, sandy eskers, isolated lagoons and small islets. Sightseeing spots on land you can find Päijätsalo lookout towers or Kullasvuori lookout towers close to Padasjoki marina.

Rajaportti Sauna – Oldest Public Sauna in Finland

Rajaportti sauna in Pispala, Tampere, is the oldest public sauna in Finland still in use. Built 1906. Separate departments for men and women. A preheated, massive stove. A long-lasting, sturdy löyly, that is the sauna spirit. Also a coffee house and services of a massotherapist available.

Rajaportti Sauna has remained more or less unchanged through decades. Here you can experience a genuine time travel to the past while entering the best sauna ever. Actually, the only change in facilities worth mentioning was made in 1930’s by erecting a wall to separate men’s washroom from women’s. This sauna, still heated by wood in traditional manner, was established in 1906 and has since offered memorable sauna bathing for Tampere dwellers as well as visitors from near and far.

The massive masonry stove makes the heart of the sauna. Meter-long logs are needed to make the stones, in all weighing over a ton, to glow and sparkle in red. After the fire is out, water is thrown over the stones to remove remains of carbon monoxide, then the lids of the funnel are shut, and the heat is getting smooth and steady, the stove calms down. Löyly, the heat and the spirit of the sauna, spreads out and lasts for the whole of the evening. First somewhat stern and dry, the löyly gets more gentle, moist and supple later in the evening.

In each dressing room there is space for 15-20 persons at a time, and approximately 12 in the sauna room itself. We do not want any haste in the sauna and therefore appreciate that mobile phones will be shut when entering the sauna zone. Sauna bath with other sauna fellows, whether new acquaintances or old friends of yours, is an essential part of a visit to a public sauna and may makes your sauna visit all the more pleasant and interesting experience.

Kaupinoja Sauna

The whole family can enjoy Kaupinoja sauna.

Kaupinoja sauna is practically open all the time, except on the second Tuesday of every month, when maintenance is carried out there. In our large sauna you will get quality steam, after which it is nice to take a dip in the refreshing lake water.

You can swim in Lake Näsijärvi both in summer and in winter. From the sauna, a path and stairs lead directly to the lake, so the passage is smooth.

Rauhaniemi Folk Spa

Rauhaniemi folk spa offers its visitors the most atmospheric sauna experience and stunning views across Näsijärvi. Rauhaniemi has two traditional Finnish saunas. There are two public mixed saunas at Kuuma, where you can come with a friend or by yourself to relax. The bigger one is the smoke sauna and the smaller of our saunas is a traditional wood-heated sauna.

An essential part of the experience for all senses that Kuuma offers, is delicious food. Our menu is created by a local gift to the Finnish kitchen, Eero Mäkelä.

The Kuuma food philosophy is based on pure Nordic tastes, spiced up with some small, surprising twists. The menu changes according to the season.
