Lake Vesijärvi

Lake Vesijärvi is part of the Kymijoki water system and empties into southern Lake Päijänne along the Vääksyjoki river and Vääksy Canal. The total length of Lake Vesijärvi is 25 kilometers. The deepest point of Lake Vesijärvi is 40 meters. The total area of the lake is 108 km2 and the biggest basins are Enonselkä (Lahti), Komonselkä and Laitialanselkä (Hollola) and Kajaanselkä (Asikkala).
Lake Vesijärvi has been managed for over thirty years, and nowadays the Lake Vesijärvi Foundation combines public and private resources to secure funding for research, maintenance, and management efforts focusing on Lake Vesijärvi and its catchment area.
In summertime a number of cafés and restaurants operate at the Lake Vesijärvi in Lahti. At the harbour you can also find some of the most interesting sights in Lahti: The Sibelius Hall and the “Pro Puu” Gallery. Lake Vesijärvi acts as a gateway to Lakeland Finland, and the clear and drinkable southern Lake Päijänne can be reached via Vääksy Canal. Several cruises on Lake Vesijärvi start from Lahti Harbour.

Atmospheric saunas

The modern lakeside sauna has a smart sauna stove. The sauna for 10 persons has a large window with lake views. The sauna building has a WC, 2 dressing rooms and 2 shower rooms as well as the sauna room. Furthermore, there is a is large terrace with lake views.

The atmospheric 6-person cellar sauna is located in the basement of the manor house. There is a shower room with 2 showers, a space to cool down, dressing room and WC. 


The traditional log cabin sauna by lake Urajärvi has two separate saunas with dressing rooms, a chamber with fireplace, WC, and a terrace.

The sauna & barbecue huts surrounded by a terrace are located on the lakefront. The wood heated sauna seats 7-8 people at the time. Additionally, there is a separate building behind the huts with shower, toilet and dressing room facilities. 

Lahti Sports Centre

Internationally known Lahti Sports Centre is the heart of the ski games. In addition to being a world-renowned arena for winter events, the Lahti Sports Centre is one of the town’s most fascinating tourist attractions for the whole family.

In summer, you can enjoy the wonderful view from the observation deck at the top of the Lahti Ski Jump tower. The out-run of the ski jumping hill serves as a pleasant outdoor swimming pool with separate pools for adults and children. And when hunger hits, you’ll find a nice café and a restaurant with a view over the whole Sports Centre in the museum building.

The hiking trails and skiing tracks in Salpausselkä, some of which go all the way to Messilä Ski Centre, also start from the Sports Centre. And what’s more, the services of the Sports Centre are only 10 minutes away on foot from the centre of Lahti.

What makes the Sports Centre area so well suitable for sports is its geology: the unique, diverse landscape of ridges, kettle holes, steep slopes and raised beaches. The Sports Centre is one of the most significant geosites within the Salpausselkä UNESCO Global Geopark.

Viewing deck at the Ski Jumping Tower

High on the hill, take the elevator to the top and enjoy the panoramic views from the observation deck of Lahti’s tallest ski jumping tower – the historic site of multiple Nordic Championships and World Cup events in Salpausselkä UNESCO geopark.
Open daily in the summer (and the rest of the year by reservation), the observation deck overlooks Lahti Sport Center with its open air swimming pool, the city of Lahti, Lake Vesijärvi and the abundant nature of the region. During the summer, you can also make a round trip on the ski-lift just like the jumpers do.

Yes, ski jumpers also train in the summer – you may get lucky and see a jumper taking flight!

The viewing deck is open to the public daily from June 1 – August 31st with the exception of the Finnish Midsummer holiday. Beyond the summer, the deck can only be visited with a reservation for your private group.

Ainoa Winery Experience

Discover the winery that placed Finland on the world’s wine map. Most of our wines have won awards internationally, in the US, Germany and the prestigious competitions of France.

Ainoa Winery is located in Hollola, just 10 km from the center of Lahti and 4 km from the exit on highway route 4.
The winery consists of a production facility, shop and tasting room all in the same building. In sunny weather we also have outdoor seating.
Visitors can purchase bottles of our wine that are up to 13% alcohol. Wine is also sold by the glass and can be enjoyed in our tasting room or outside in the summer sun.
In addition to our own products, visitors can get carefully selected high-quality local products in our shop.

Tours of our production facility and structured tastings (wine only or wine plus cheeses or other foods) are available if booked in advance.

A special bus-tour package is available for large groups (20-50 people).
It includes four small glasses of wine per person, a presentation that shares the story of the winery and a tour of the production facility. Cost is 13€ per person and must be booked in advance.

Sibelius Hall

Sibelius Hall is located by the beautiful Lake Vesijärvi. Sibelius Hall is a congress- and concert center that offers diverse services for both consumers and companies. Sibelius Hall was built in 2000 adjacent to an old factory building. The modern wooden architecture is combined with the old industrial history in the most interesting way.
The Main Hall is an acoustic miracle, which creates unforgettable musical memories for concert goers.

Inspired by seasonality, the head chef and co-owner Sami Häkkinen creates Finnish & nordic cuisine à la carte of local ingredients. Menus are updated several times a year according to season with tasty wine recommendations. The facilities can easily accommodate larger groups.

Salpausselkä UNESCO Global Geopark

Salpausselkä UNESCO Global Geopark tells the story of the best-known geological entity of Finland. It is situated in the Lahti region in southern Finland and it consists of the area of six municipalities in Päijät-Häme: Lahti, Hollola, Heinola, Asikkala, Sysmä and Padasjoki.
The First and Second Salpausselkä are unique ice-marginal formations laid down by ancient meltwater streams at the end of the Ice Age. They reach across the entirety of southern Finland and are at their most spectacular in the area of Salpausselkä Geopark. Here they are joined to eskers of international value, such as the picturesque Kelvenne Island and Pulkkilanharju Esker in Päijänne National Park.

Two canal route

A fascinating cruise route on southern Lake Päijänne: two canals and three different lakes. The return journey is made 4 days in a week from June to September. Good coach connections. Travel in one direction by scheduled coach and in the other way by ship. There is a restaurant and café on board.

Kayaking Trip on the Lake

Enjoy lake nature with this relaxing kayak trip. Depending on the weather we will choose our route between Kukkasjärvi lakes and Salajärvi lake. We have a break with a nice view to the lake. After snacks and relaxing we continue our paddling.

For this kayaking trip you need slight kayaking experience and you have to be able to swim.

You are welcome to visit Teerenpeli Brewery and Distillery with guided tours and tastings at the Visitor Center and shop at the Brewery Shop only an hour away from Helsinki!

At the guided tours you will get to know about the history of Teerenpeli company and have a walk inside the brewery and distillery. You will learn how the brewery and distillery products are made at Teerenpeli and after the tour it is possible to participate to a guided distillery tasting to deepen your understanding of our award-winning products.

Lahti Museum of Visual Arts Malva

Malva is a new museum full of art, design, posters and culture in Lahti, less than a 50-minute trip from Helsinki.

Lahti Museum of Visual Arts Malva locates in Malski, an old brewery building from 1912 in Lahti city centre. Malva’s exhibitions, Malski’s restaurant world, conference center and colourful museum shop form an entity which is unique in the whole Finland.

Linnaistensuo Mire

Linnaistensuo mire, located only seven kilometres from the centre of Lahti, is a nationally valuable raised bog. The tranquil mire landscape can be admired from the duckboard trail crossing it. Linnaistensuo mire is part of the national mire conservation programme and one of the sites of Salpausselkä UNESCO Global Geopark.
On Linnaistensuo mire, surrounded by mixed forests, moist hollows alternate with drier hummocks. The flora of mire is typical for raised bogs and the representativeness of the mire makes it valuable protected site.
The nature trail, about 1,5 kilometres long, runs mostly on duckboard trail. The information boards along the way tell about the mire ecosystem. Linnaistensuo mire can be reached along Korvenrannantie or Linnaistentie and Ilolantie roads. The paths leading to the duckboard trail are marked on the trees with yellow paint.

Päijänne National Park

The pristine waters of Lake Päijänne wash the sandy shores of a chain of islands formed by an esker ridge that dates back to the Ice Age. Take a boat trip or rent a kayak and explore the park’s many islands and their sandy coves and rocky shores. The nature trail at Pulkkilanharju ridge, accessible by road, also offers fine lakekand views. Look out for ospreys soaring over the lake.

In summer season lunch and day cruises start from Lahti harbour in Lake Vesijärvi.

Pikku-Vesijärvi Park is a green oasis just outside the city center. It provides a wonderful venue for fitness events,pop ups, small music festivals and exercise for example. There is a musical fountain, outdoor exercise equipment, grass fields and a one-kilometer long footpath in the park.

Watersport and Outdoor Activities

Jannen Kalastus ja Kayakki offers kayak, canoe, SUP board rentals and transport services in the Lahti, Vääksy and Padasjoki areas. Paddle to Päijänne National Park and spend the night on one of its largest islands, Kelvenne, or take a kayaking day trip and enjoy outdoor barbecue at the nearby Pernasaari.

We offer a selection of SUP boards, kayaks, canoes and additional services. Our friendly staff is glad to assist you. Our shop in Vääksy is located right by the water only 200 metres from the beach.

For larger groups, please contact us in advance to ensure that there is enough equipment available. It’s best to book 3–40 days in advance so that we can make sure that to get you exactly the equipment you want.

Paddling is one of the most memorable and wonderful ways to spend a summer day and offers a great chance to admire the beautiful Finnish nature! Gather your friends and family and embark on a trip of the waterways of Asikkala. Make a day trip kayaking around Salonsaari Island or take a paddle in Päijänne National Park and Kelvenne island and enjoy the breathtaking natural landscape. Taking due care of safety, you can also paddle across the Vääksy canal to Lake Vesijärvi, which is 3 metres higher than Vesijärvi.

The nearby Pernasaari island is located 2.5 kilometres from the beach and it features a designated municipal area for recreational use. Close to this is also offered a beautiful and shorter river route.

Lake Jyväsjärvi and Lutakko Harbor

In summer, the Jyväskylä harbour transforms into a point of recreation for the city dwellers of all ages. The harbour, located in the immediate vicinity of the city centre and the Travel Centre attracts people to enjoy sunny summer days, fun activities and varied treats to eat.

The Jyväskylä Harbour, the northernmost passenger harbour on Lake Päijänne, is the starting point for several different cruises. From Jyväskylä you can comfortably sail to Lahti, Jämsä, Suolahti, Laukaa and Viitasaari, for example. A cruise is an excellent way of experiencing the scenery on Lake Päijänne while enjoying the delicious buffets on the cruise boats.

You can also take off from the harbour on a floating sauna. In between sauna baths, it is fun to dip into the refreshing lake water to cool off. Or enjoy the lake sceneries by renting a Houseboat, which is sure to be a memorable experience! If you are looking for excitement, you can hop aboard a water jet or test the ferocious-looking flyboards.

A stone’s throw from the harbour is unique opportunity to race along the water surface on a wakeboard or rent SUP boards.

In the harbour, there are activities for every taste! The Rantaraitti recreational route in Jyväskylä is the biggest outdoor gym in Finland. The route takes you round the Jyväsjärvi lake. The 13 kilometre route provides changing landscapes in different neighbourhoods in Jyväskylä.

The large green space in the harbour offers a good ground for cosy lounging and having picnics. In addition to your picnic, you can indulge your taste buds at many restaurants in the area.

The Lutakko Square located by the harbour is famous for music. The range of events and festivals on the Lutakko Square is wide, from the large Rally Finland and Suomipop to smaller events.

The Jyväskylä Lutakko Harbour offers a lot to do even in winter.
Visiting craft can take on fuel and drinking water – as well as empty their septic tank and bilge – at the service jetty.

Kuokkala Manor

The Kuokkala Manor is the first Wivi Lönn-designed building to be completed in Jyväskylä. The stone manor-house, completed in 1904, and its courtyard constitute a provincially significant built cultural environment. The manor lies next to the waterway of Äijälänjoki River passing into Lake Päijänne. This Jugendstil building has served as both a residential property and as the obstetrical hospital of the Jyväskylä Rural Municipality. Today, the manor revolves around a unique, round-the-year restaurant and a wine bar. Other activities take place at the manor as well, such as open cultural events and art exhibitions.

Kuokkala Manor

The heart of the manor’s operations is a unique restaurant that operates all year round. Here we focus on genuine hospitality and a purity of flavors. Authentic flavors with an unforgettable dining experience. Jyväskylä’s most memorable restaurant experience.

The Kuokkala mansion, completed in 1904. Building is designed by Wivi Lönn. The manor was built by Julius Johnson as his family’s residence. Johnson’s estate sold the manor to the city of Jyväskylä in 1946, after which the Manor has functioned as from a maternity hospital to a band room and an art cafe. Today, the heart of the Manor’s operations is the year-round unique restaurant, which also has party/meeting facilities.

When you enter the lands of the Manor, you are entering our own era, where the past and the present combine in an inimitable way. That’s why we want to welcome all visitors to enjoy the Manor’s hospitality.

The Capital City of Alvar Aalto’s Architecture

Jyväskylä is known as the capital of Alvar Aalto, as there are more buildings in and around the city by world-renowned architect Alvar Aalto than anywhere else in the world.

A wonderful Aalto2 Museum Center will open in the summer of 2023, accommodating the Alvar Aalto Museum and the Museum of Central Finland under one roof. The new museum center focuses on heritage, the cultural environment, architecture and design.

In the capital of Alvar Aaltos there is a suitable way for everyone to get to know the history, objects and anecdotes of the world-famous architect. For example, on Aalto-themed bus tours and walking tours, visitors gain a deep insight into the unique features of Aalto’s architecture. Captivating stories of Aalto’s life and architecture, told by a knowledgeable guide, offer a whole new perspective on this person.

Laukko Manor

Welcome to the historic Laukko Manor, located in the most beautiful lake region in Pirkanmaa.

Laukko is first mentioned in historical documents in 1416. Over the course of six centuries, the village of Laukko has grown into Laukko Manor of stories and legends.

I (Liisa Lagerstam) am the current lucky owner of Laukko Manor. We opened my childhood home to the general public for the first time in summer 2016.

In seven years, Laukko has grown into an oasis of living history, where tens of thousands of summer visitors come to enjoy good art, music and food.

Seitseminen Nature Centre

The Seitseminen Nature Centre is a treasure trove of nature information and a year-round base for hikers. Its exhibitions take you on a hike through a deep forest. You can also enjoy a cup of coffee. The Nature Centre provides restaurant services, guidance and topical hiking tips for you and your group.

Suitability: Suitable for the whole family, hikers, student groups of all ages and other groups. The main exhibition, auditorium and café are accessible for wheelchairs. Also pets are welcome. Please check the opening hours from the homepage.

Helvetinjärvi National Park

The landscape here is dominated by geological features created millions of years ago by mighty movements deep in the Earth’s crust. After admiring the rugged cliffs around Helvetinjärvi (Hell’s Lake) and Helvetinkolu (Hell’s Hole) you can relax on the sandy lakeshore at Haukanhieta.

Siipiweikot Tampella

Second Siipiweikot restaurant opened in Tampere in the spring of 2019 when our Aleksanterinkatu restaurant could no longer meet the increased hot wing hunger in Tampere. Tampella is decorated with fresh, good and warm atmosphere. We have a large bright-glazed terrace that quarantees warm and beautiful hot wing experiences from early sunny spring until late autumn.

Museum Centre Vapriikki

With a picturesque location beside the Tammerkoski rapids, Vapriikki is a museum centre that offers things to see and do for the whole family. We host about a dozen exhibitions each year, with varied themes, including history, technology, and natural sciences.

Vapriikki is also home to the Natural History Museum of Tampere, the Media Museum Rupriikki, the Mineral Museum, the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame, Postal Museum and The Finnish Museum of Games. Our visitors are served by museum restaurant Valssi and the Vapriikki museum shop, which offers a wide selection of books, gifts, and souvenirs.

Pispala

Pispala is perhaps the most beautiful part of Tampere: colourful wooden houses scattered all over the steep ridge with roads, gardens and stairways snaking in between. Enjoy the view down from the ridge to the lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi, or take in the whole Pispala ridge from the southern lake. In Pispala you can find e.g. a museum for the Finnish writer Lauri Viita, Rajaportti, the oldest public sauna still in use, Café Pispala and Pispalan Pulteri restaurant.

Pyynikki Observation Tower and Café

Located on the world’s largest gravel ridge, the 26-meter-tall red granite tower was opened in 1929 on the 150th anniversary of Tampere City. Magnificent views over Tampere and its surroundings open from the top of the tower and it continues to be one of the most popular local sights.

On the ground level there is a famous cafeteria where they make unique doughnuts or ‘munkki’ (in Finnish), which are known all over Finland and many say they are the best in the country.

The tower and the café are open every day of the year from 9 am ’til 8 pm (9 pm in the summertime). Only on Midsummer Eve and on Christmas Eve they close earlier, at 4 pm. The admission up to the tower is merely 2 € for adults and 1 € for children between 4 and 15 years.

Näsinneula Observation Tower

The peak of the second highest observation tower in the Nordic countries reaches 168 meters. You can see breathtaking views from the observation deck or the revolving Restaurant Näsinneula.

Särkänniemi Theme Park

Särkänniemi Theme Park located by the gorgeous Lake Näsijärvi in Tampere consists of four attractions: Amusement Park, Doghill Fairytale Farm, Näsinneula Observation Tower and Aquarium. Amusement Park and Doghill Fairytale Farm are open only seasonally, but Näsinneula Observation Tower and Aquarium are open year round. Särkänniemi Amusement Park has more than 30 rides for everyone’s taste. With Särkänniemi Pass (available during the summer season) you get unlimited access to all the attractions and rides.

World’s Only Moomin Museum

The Moomin Museum is an experiential art museum for Moomin fans and art lovers of all ages. Day Cruises from Laukontori aboard the M/S Silver Sky

Come enjoy a delicious lunch on the fresh waters or relax with a drink while taking in the beautiful and invigorating lakeside scenery. Our two-hour cruise on Lake Pyhäjärvi is a feast for both the palate and the eyes. If not feeling hungry, you can also come aboard for the views, the open air and the marvelous vista over the south side of Tampere.

The route of our daily cruise takes you through the gorgeous sceneries of Lake Pyhäjärvi with the ship embarking from the Laukontori Harbor at the very heart of Tampere. After stepping aboard a mere stone’s throw from the Main Square, you will take in the beautiful hillside views of Pispala as the ship goes around the Viikinsaari Island and returns arching close to the shores of the Hatanpää Manor, its English-style rose garden and Arboretum.

On our ship Silver Sky, we place high emphasis on locally sourced produce and ingredients and generally favor domestic materials and stock. We aspire to provide a modern Finnish cuisine especially suited to the scenery of the inland waterways with its islands and lakes. The wines for every meal come hand-picked by our in-house sommelier.

The main course varies on a regular basis, and everyone will find tasty dishes at our plentiful lunch buffet.

Grand Hotel Tammer

Built in 1929, Grand Hotel Tammer is the third oldest hotel in Finland. Designed by the city architect Bertel Strömmer, the building is a great example of Nordic Classicism. From the very beginning, it was built to house a hotel of international standards. Rest well on premium bedding surrounded by modern amenities and city views. In the 87 rooms and corridors, restored with honor, you can feel the spirit of history. All our rooms are non-smoking.

Vanajanlinna

The period of Vanajanlinna began in 1918, when Doctor Carl Wilhelm Rosenlew bought the estate in Äiläälä and transformed it into a hunting Manor. Construction of the Main Building, designed by the architect Sigurd Frosterus, began in 1919 and the Manor was finished, in all its glory, five years later.
Rosenlew remained the owner of the Manor until the year 1941. There were two candidates to take up ownership: President Risto Ryti and the extremely wealthy German weapons manufacturer Willy Daugs. Permission for purchase went to Daugs and the Manor didn’t become the President’s summer home as planned. However, following Germany’s loss in WWII, the German property was transferred to Soviet possession in compensation. The Manor was overseen by the board for Soviet property, and during this time the Main Building was left empty and fell into disrepair.
Yrjö Sirola rented the house in 1947, and it began to house the Sirola College. In 1956 the Sirola Foundation bought the buidings and the land. More than half of the land was given to veterans to use as small farms and land for houses, leaving the other half to what was Vanaja municipality at the time. Sirola College was finally shut down in 1994.
Two years later, Hämeenlinna City Council bought the estate, and it was leased by Vanajanlinna Oy, partly owned by the Sirola Foundation. In 1998, Mika Walkamo and Pekka Vihma became owners of Vanajanlinna Oy, and began running a Conference Hotel on the estate.

Today Vanajanlinna is a full-service hotel and award-winning conference, event and banquet venue. Aulanko Tower

Aulangonvuori Hill is dominated by a 33-metres-tall granite tower built during 1906 – 07. This landmark-like tower resembles a castle tower, and it is designed by architect Waldemar Aspelin.
One of the Finnish national landscapes, the valley of Lake Vanajavesi, can be seen from the scenic lookout tower of Aulangonvuori Hill. The tower is open from 8 am to 7 pm daily during the summer. Admission is free.

Aulanko Nature Reserve

Aulanko has been a popular destination with visitors for more than a hundred years. Nowadays, there is a lot to see in Aulanko Nature Reserve, in addition to the beautiful scenery. The forest park of Aulanko, its sights, and the view from the scenic lookout tower of Aulangonvuori Hill over the national landscape attract more than 400 000 visitors every year. The area is best suitable for day trips.

The English-style park, which forms a part of the nature reserve, was constructed in 1883 – 1938 and, with its buildings and cultural history, it is a nationally valuable site. To maintain the spacious park landscape, the forest park is actively managed. The nature reserve also includes forest landscape in its natural state.

The forest park of Aulanko has had a significant impact on the Finnish park culture. Nowadays, Aulanko area belongs to the first National Urban Park in Finland (hameenlinna.fi).

Aulangon Tornikahvila

You will find the tower café by the Aulanko historic observation tower. Take a refreshing break in the tower cafe during hiking in the park. In the surroundings of the café you will find the magnificent scenery of the observation tower, the Karhuluola (Bear Cave) and many other interesting sights to see!

Sibelius Forest

Sibelius Forest is a nature reserve of approximately 100 hectares established in 2018 east of Lake Aulangonjärvi. The area has an aging natural forest, heath forest and groves. The cliffs of Levonkallio and Kärmeskallio have spectacular views over Lake Aulangonjärvi on to the Aulanko nature reserve and the observation tower. Sibelius Forest is home to many different species of birds and animals, including tawny owls, ural owls and flying squirrels.

Sibelius Forest is named after the composer Jean Sibelius, who has wandered in these forests and observed the nature. Sibelius got inspiration for his compositions from nature. Through the Sibelius Forest there is a nature trail with eight different information boards that tell about the nature of the area and the relation between Sibelius and nature. The Sibelius Forest is part of a hiking trail around Lake Aulangonjärvi.

Häme Castle

Häme Castle is a medieval castle in Hämeenlinna, Finland. The Castle was most likely built during the late 13th century to serve as military base in the border zone between Sweden and Novgorod. At the end of the Middle ages the castle was governed by some of the most influential Swedish houses, the Tott, the Sture and the Posse. In addition to its status as a military fortress and home for Swedish nobility, the castle has seen use as a prison, and is currently a museum operated by the National Museum of Finland. The castle is one of the main tourist attractions of southern Finland, being the centerpiece of the city and a popular venue for events, including medieval fairs and other events.

Restaurant Piparkakkutalo

Restaurant Piparkakkutalo is located in a historical house. The house was built in 1906-07 as a home for merchant Anders Skogster whose department store was located next to the house. The house is designed by one of the most famous Finnish architect of that time, Selim A. Lindqvist. The house is a Jugend style building.

Restaurant Piparkakkutalo is ideal for all kinds of lunch and dinner occasions, informal or formal. There are also dining cabinets and meeting cabinets available for private occasions.

There is a cosy pub, Albertin Kellari, located in the basement of the Restaurant. The pub is fully licensed with a wide selection of beers, ciders and other drinks. Also a selection of tasty bar snacks is available. There is live music every week ranging from jazz to blues, roots etc. Also quiz and theme nights are organized regularly.

Birthplace of Jean Sibelius

Discover the first twenty years of famous composers life in the Birthplace of Jean Sibelius!

Birthplace of Jean Sibelius is a house museum and a concert hall that is a part of Hämeenlinna City Museum and like the other two locations, Museum Skogster and Palander House, it is also situated in the heart of Hämeenlinna City Centre.

Composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) was born and lived the first 20 years of his life in Hämeenlinna. In the Birthplace of Jean Sibelius you will experience the early years of the maestro from when he was born in 1865 to when in his twenties he moved to Helsinki to study.

The museum exhibits original items that belonged or were made by little “Janne” and his nearest people. Such as letters, drawings, travel-piano, handicrafts from his grandmother and aunt. Museum is furnished according the era from 1860s to 1880s. We hold chamber concerts regularly in the hall.

Holy Cross Church in Hattula

Holy Cross Church in Hattula serves as one of the churches of the local Lutheran congregation. As a museum church is open during most of the summer season and offers guided tours for individual tourists. Groups must book tours in advance. The Lutheran congregation in Hattula arranges Sunday services and concerts in the Holy Cross Church during the summer.

Holy Cross Church was built at the end of the 15th century, making it about five hundred years old. One of the distinctive features of the church is its red brick, as grey stone was the usual material of construction in Finland at the time. Only three medieval buildings in Finland were made of brick: the Turku Cathedral, the Castle of Hämeenlinna and this church.

The church contains about two hundred paintings. They were painted at the beginning of the 16th century (1510). The identity of the painters is unknown but they were most likely Finns, possibly nuns. The technique was called al secco. The pictures were painted on a dry surface with colors dissolved in lime-water.

The church contains many wooden sculptures. The oldest of them is the triumph crucifix, made by the master of Lieto, the first known Finnish sculptor. There are two pulpits in the church. The smaller one is the oldest extant pulpit in Finland, donated to the church in 1550. The other pulpit is from the 18th century. Both of them are hand made by Finnish artisans.

Tiirinkoski Factory

Located in Hämeenlinna, the Tiirinkoski factory exudes a warm atmosphere and boasts a stunning setting. Housed in a barn building constructed in 1910, this lifestyle-style store and cafe offer mouthwatering Belgian waffles made from the farm’s own pea flour.

Tiirinkoski has a long history of farming, and currently, the farm raises native Åland sheep, Gotland sheep, and Highland cattle. In addition to growing grain, the farm also cultivates peas. Apart from grain and pea products, Tiirinkoski sells lamb and beef products from its own livestock.

Visitors can relish in the delights of the cafe, shop for interior decor items, clothing, and even their own sheepskins, yarns, and food products at the store. Tiirinkoski farm is definitely worth a visit, even from afar!

Iittala Glass Museum

Iittala Glass Museum presents the history of the Iittala glass factory. The basic exhibition displays internationally acclaimed glass art and prominent serial design products from the late 19th to the 21st century. Guided tours are available on demand.

Naive Art Exhibition in Iittala

The Gallery of Naive Art is located in an old wooden two-storey school house in the heart of the Iittala Village, next to the Iittala glass area. There is a large selection of novelties of this intriguing art form on display by tens of contemporary naive artists. In the winter we also display the history of naive art, with different themes and cross-over exhibitions.

Naive art has a childlike tendency. The works are dreamlike, almost surrealistic with fantasy themes. The motifs are often very narrative and autobiographical, colourful and detailed. The overall impression is optimistic and funny yet some critique towards the society or the human nature may occur.

The summer exhibition interests around 20 000 visitors annually. In the winter we offer naive art exhibitions along with a variety of art courses, workshops and seminars, and small concerts. The summer exhibitions are open daily between mid-May and August, winter season between November and March, open on week-ends and on demand.

All of our novelties are for sale, and sold pieces can be collected after the exhibition has ended. We also sell pieces “to-go” from our Lobby Shop, and Naive Art Rental operates throughout the year. There are naive art products available in the Lobby shop and Artikas Marketplace website.

The story of Iittala began already 140 years ago, in 1881, when a glass factory was founded in the village of Iittala. That is where the world-famous design history of Iittala begins.
