Route description

  • Lake Saimaa Region

    Day 1

Your journey begins in Helsinki, where you arrive either by plane or ferry. After picking up your rental car, you head east toward Lappeenranta, leaving the capital behind as the landscape gradually opens into forests, fields, and shimmering lakes. The drive takes around 2–2.5 hours, offering a gentle transition from urban life to the calmer rhythm of the Finnish Lakeland.

Lappeenranta lies on the shores of Lake Saimaa, and the city’s character is closely shaped by its lakeside setting and borderland history. Food culture here is deeply connected to both tradition and innovation. Small coffee roasteries and inviting cafés reflect Finland’s strong coffee culture, and guided roastery visits offer insight into local craftsmanship and taste preferences. For a true local experience, sampling the iconic Vety and Atomi meat pastries is almost essential — a simple yet beloved street food that reflects everyday life in the region.

Culturally, Lappeenranta’s historic Fortress rises gently above the harbor, offering views over Saimaa and a glimpse into the city’s past. Within the fortress area, you’ll find museums, galleries, and handicraft shops in wooden buildings that tell stories of trade, border life, and local traditions. The area also hosts small eateries and summer cafés, making it easy to combine cultural visits with relaxed dining.

As evening approaches, lakeside promenades and terraces invite you to slow down and enjoy seasonal dishes made with local ingredients.

    Day 2

After breakfast, continue north through the lake-filled landscapes of Saimaa toward Savonlinna, a scenic drive of around 3 hours. On your way, you can stop by Imatra to have a look at one of the country’s oldest tourist attractions, the Imatrankoski. Or you can have a break a bit more north, to visit the Sculpture Park in Parikkala.

Savonlinna’s unique setting among islands and narrow straits is closely linked to its culinary identity. Freshwater fish and forest ingredients such as mushrooms and berries feature prominently in local cuisine, prepared with a strong respect for seasonality and simplicity.

To deepen your understanding of the region, visit Riihisaari – Savonlinna Museum, which explores local life shaped by water and trade, or Lusto – The Finnish Forest Museum, highlighting the forest as Finland’s traditional pantry and cultural backbone.

In the evening, experience Savonlinna from the water on board a historic steam boat, where dinner can be enjoyed as the vessel glides through the Saimaa waterways — a memorable way to combine local flavours, lake scenery, and living tradition.

    Day 3

Today’s drive to Joensuu takes around 2.5 hours, tracing the eastern edge of the Lakeland region. The scenery gradually opens up, yet remains defined by woodlands, waterways, and fertile riverbanks that have long supported local livelihoods and food culture.

Joensuu sits along the Pielisjoki River and is known for its youthful atmosphere and strong cultural identity. In the historic Taitokortteli, traditional craftsmanship lives on through workshops, small boutiques, and cafés that highlight local skills, materials, and tastes. The area reflects how heritage and creativity continue to shape everyday life.

For a different cultural perspective, Botania offers a journey through botanical collections and exhibitions, connecting global plant cultures with themes of sustainability and northern growing conditions. Day 4

The drive from Joensuu to Lieksa takes about 2 hours, leading deeper into forested terrain and toward the iconic scenery of Koli National Park. This area is often considered the spiritual heart of Finnish nature, where sweeping views and deep silence define the experience.

A visit to Koli Nature Centre Ukko offers a meaningful introduction to the region’s natural and cultural heritage, explaining how geology, forests, and traditional livelihoods have shaped life in this distinctive landscape. Nearby, the sculpture park adds a creative layer, blending art with the surrounding nature and inviting visitors to experience the environment from a new perspective.

Culinary traditions are closely tied to place here. A beer tasting in Koli, featuring flavours inspired by local ingredients, reflects how modern craftsmanship continues to draw from nature. To fully appreciate the scenery, a guided “Tour of the Tops” reveals panoramic viewpoints that have long inspired artists and storytellers.

In the afternoon or evening, a cruise aboard M/S Marival offers a serene way to experience Koli from the water, completing the day with lake views that mirror the quiet grandeur of the surrounding hills.

    Day 5

From Lieksa, the road leads west to Nurmes in about 1.5 hours, passing lakes and forested landscapes that have long supported Karelian ways of life. In Nurmes, the historic Bomba House offers a hands-on introduction to regional food heritage. A Karelian pie workshop reveals the craftsmanship behind this iconic dish: simple ingredients, time-honoured techniques, and deep cultural meaning passed down through generations.

Continuing north toward Kuhmo, the landscape becomes increasingly remote and untouched. Upon arrival, the town’s strong connection to folklore and music comes to the forefront. A visit to the Kalevala Center explores the epic poems, myths, and oral traditions that form the foundation of Finnish and Karelian identity, offering valuable context for both culture and cuisine.

In the evening, Kuhmo Chamber Music presents a refined cultural contrast with world-class performances set against the region’s quiet wilderness. Music, much like local food, becomes a way of storytelling here, completing the day with an experience rooted in tradition, artistry, and place.

    Day 6

Leaving Kuhmo, you drive north for around 1.5 hours toward Suomussalmi, entering a region known for its vast forests and open spaces. One of the most striking cultural landmarks along the way is Hiljainen Kansa – The Silent People, an open-air art installation featuring hundreds of silent figures standing in a field. The installation blends art, landscape, and reflection, offering an unusual yet powerful encounter with northern creativity and storytelling.

Nearby, Soiva Metsä (The Singing Forest) adds a playful, sensory dimension to the journey. Interactive sound elements hidden among the trees invite visitors to engage with nature through listening as much as seeing — a reminder of how deeply sound, silence, and environment are connected in Finnish culture.

Continuing south toward Kajaani (approximately 1.5 hours), the surroundings gradually become more populated, yet nature remains ever-present. For the night, an overnight stay near Kajaani at the Arctic Giant Birdhouse Hotel offers a unique conclusion to the day. Nest-like wooden structures rise from the landscape, blending architecture, storytelling, and nature — a fitting end to a journey shaped by imagination, wilderness, and tradition.

Leaving Kuopio, the road leads toward Varkaus, passing through lake districts shaped by both nature and early industry. Varkaus reflects an important chapter of Finland’s industrial and engineering history, closely tied to the use of waterways and surrounding forests. A brief stop offers insight into how innovation and craftsmanship have long been part of everyday life in the region.

Just a couple of kilometers from Varkaus city center, a fascinating experience , the Museum of Mechanical Music presents a collection of self-playing instruments from different eras. The rhythmic sounds and intricate mechanisms reveal how craftsmanship and entertainment once filled homes and public spaces alike.

Continuing to Mikkeli (total driving time approx. 2.5–3 hours), cultural layers deepen. A visit to Muisti – Centre of War and Peace explores Finland’s modern history through personal stories and thought-provoking exhibitions, offering a reflective pause within the journey.
