Museum Eliel offers experiences of and insights into the history and present day of North Karelia. The exhibitions at Eliel showcase the region’s diverse voices, breathtakingly beautiful nature and life through the ages.

With its refreshed brand, Museum Eliel continues the work that the North Karelian museum has been doing for over a hundred years.

The North Karelian museum was founded in 1917 to document the region’s folk culture. Over the decades the museum has gone through many forms and locations.

The museum’s first exhibition spaces opened in Joensuu City Hall in 1920. After the years spent at the City Hall, the museum moved in 1955 to Karjalatalo in Ilosaari, where it operated for the next four decades.

At the turn of the millennium the exhibition spaces moved to the heart of the city — to Carelicum on the edge of the Market Square — where the museum opened its galleries in 1998. The North Karelian Museum operated as North Karelian museum Hilma until December 2023.

Museum Eliel opened its doors to the public at Joensuu’s old City Hall in October 2025.

Taitokortteli is a cultural centre located in the heart of Joensuu. Over the years, Taitokortteli has become a centre for local and visitor craft professionals and enthusiasts. Original Sokos Hotel Kimmel has gotten a new spark. We opened the walls to face the stunning nature. We brought beautiful strong colours and earthy materials into the rooms. We built new suites with their own balconies, a massive ballroom, a brand new sauna department, new Bistro Heili – and a night club Las Palmas for the nightlife lovers.

The renewed Kimmel was made together with local electricians, carpenters, beer brewers, Karelian pie bakers and craftsmen. Enjoy their works of art!

The Karelian Pasty Workshop

The delicious Karelian pasties are famous throughout Finland. These unique pies are an important part of the region’s food culture, and at this workshop you get the chance to prepare them together with the hostess of a Karelian guesthouse. At the same time you can experience the local culture.

The oldest traditional pasties usually had a rye crust, but the North Karelian and Ladoga Karelian variants also contained wheat to improve the baking characteristics. The common fillings were barley and talkkuna. In the 19th century, first potato and buckwheat were introduced as fillings, and later also rice and millet.

Today, the most familiar and common version has a thin rye crust with a filling of rice. Mashed potato and rice-and-carrot fillings are also commonly available. Butter, often mixed with chopped-up boiled egg (egg butter or munavoi), is spread over the hot pasties before eating.

Karjalanpiirakka has Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG) status in Europe. This means that any product outside of specific regions and bakeries that make a similar product cannot call them karjalanpiirakka and instead call them riisipiirakka (“rice pasties”), perunapiirakka (“potato pasties”) etc., depending on the filling.

Marival II scenic ticket – Cruise on Lake Pielinen

Experience the national landscape of Koli from the waves of Lake Pielinen aboard M/S Marival II.The scenic cruise departs from Koli harbor, sails across Lake Pielinen to Vuonislahti, and returns to Koli. M/S Marival II was built in 1965 in Poland, where it cruised for the first 30 years. The vessel came to Finland in 1995, when it was refurbished to its current state. The ship provides excellent and practical facilities for passenger transportation and cruising. This 88-seat vessel features a fully licensed bar, a restaurant, and a spacious sun deck. It also has two restrooms, ventilation, and central heating. Thanks to its stability, the vessel is safe for even large groups. Dogs are welcome aboard.

This two-hour electric fatbike tour offers a fast-paced and unforgettable adventure into the traditional landscapes of North Karelia. We ride through pine forests and along the shore landscape of Lake Pielinen, rise to the top of fells and admire the beauty of Finnish nature.

Located in Break Sokos Hotel Bomba, Buolu is a café, artisan pizzeria and classic pasta restaurant located in the middle of Bomba’s buzz and all its activities.

Bomba House

Bomba House is a copy of a house built in Suojärvi, Russian Karelia. The original house was built by Jegor Bombin in 1855 for his son Dimitri Jegorov and it was built using long round logs. The original house had 27 rooms and you could even ride in with a horse.

After the Second World War the house was decided to be re-built to Bomba, Nurmes. This beautiful building represents traditional Karelian style architecture with its surrounding Karelian village. The building has a Restaurant Bomba, café and small boutiques.

Kick sled tour in the evening twilight at Bomba

Join our guide to admire the twilight of a winter evening from the runners of a kick sled. On a clear, frosty night, the sky may open up in its most magnificent splendor, and you can see a sea of stars. Our route may meander through the snowdrifts of a snowy forest as well as over the icy crust of Lake Pielinen.

At the end of the tour, we’ll get cozy in a traditional Finnish hut, where participants can bake their own campfire pancakes and enjoy coffee made on an open fire. Before heading out on the tour, participants will dress in outdoor gear (you may also use your own winter gear), and the guide will teach techniques for kick sledding. This tour requires good physical fitness.

We drive this safari with new Touring model snowmobiles – due to new technology they’re safer and more environmentally friendly as they produce lower emissions.

Cross-country skiing at Tahko

Tahko offers cross-country skiing through the most beautiful landscapes, with relaxing rest stops and all the services you need for a day on the trails.

There are many trails to choose from, which start from accommodation and car parks making cross country skiing easily accessible for all. Trails vary in length from hundreds of meters to tens of kilometres.

The area’s trail network meanders from the heart of the Tourist Area to Nilsiä, through golf courses to cottage villages, fields and forests. And, in the heart of winter, the trails lead to the ice of Syväri lake and the highest points of Nipanen.

Canoeing season starts from the May and ends in October. Enjoy the peaceful serenity of paddling as you watch the slopes of the mountains reflect on the water.

You can easily rent the equipment you need – from canoes for maximum of 3 persons to more linear kayaks. Canoeing routes have several impressing resting places in the Tahko archipelagos to enjoy along your journey.

Many of our visitors use canoes to reach nearby Kammonluoto, where the summer day turns into an evening by the campfire, swimming and admiring the stunning sunset. On the way from the centre of Tahko to Kammonluodo, visit historic Aholansaari, or – if you wish to go a little further – the little Nameless Shelter is always worth a visit.

You can spend your holiday at your own pace in these cozy and well-equipped apartments, with all services of Tahko nearby. The completely renovated Break Sokos Hotel Tahko is located in the heart of the tourist center, close to the skiing center and all Tahko activities.
The Rooftop Spa, Wellness lounge is located on the roof floor of our hotel, and our weekly program includes e.g. Flow yoga. Our hotel has a simulator game room where you can play Golf and Hunting. The fully equipped 130-square-meter gym is available to our hotel guests free of charge, and you can book outdoor activities at the Tahko Safaris office.

Looking for a thrill and breathtaking views? Tahko has long mountain biking trails with variable terrain and places for a quick stop that offer a chance to get inspired by the nature and the landscapes.

There are several bike rental agencies with broad selection of mountain bikes, fatbikes and E-fatbikes located in Tahko.

During summer and autumn:
TAHKOMÄKI ROUTE 14,4 km
The route: Tahko – Panorama chairlift starting point – Panorama Bar & Cafe – Pehku Bar – Nipanen campfire place – Tahko
The route starts along the road from the bottom of the slopes and has easier parts and parts that offer more challenge. This route will take you to admire the wonderful scenery of Tahko.

RAHASMÄKI ROUTE 20,1 km
The route: Tahko – Panorama chairlift starting point – Hiekkoniemi – Tahkomäentie – Rahasmäki campfire place – Pehkuntie – Nipanen campfire place – Taukotupa campfire place – Tahko
Rahasmäki route goes around practically the whole mountain of Tahko. There are about 370 meters of ascent on the way and the platform also varies between easy dirt roads and rocky paths. Despite the challenge, the route rewards hikers with amazing views and lovely resting places.

Beside traditional mountain biking, Tahko offers excellent conditions for downhill biking as well. Nine different level downhill tracks are well maintained and marked on the terrain.

During winter and spring:

The route: Tahko – Nallelaavu campfire place – Tahko Safaris – the circular route continues in the varied terrains of Nipanen, Tarpisenmäki and Hoikkamäki – Tahko Safaris – Nallelaavu campfire place – Tahko
The route is well maintained and best for bikes with wide tires.

Lähde Forest Spa

Water has for so long awaited the moment of its liberation from underneath the rocks to allow it to meander freely through its own paths towards the vastness of lakes and seas.

Despite its flux, water offers everyone its time and solace. It knows that it is time to provide softness that has been here and there lost in this world.

The forest spa brings seasons near, for all of our saunas and pools are outside. Wood-burning saunas bring to their unique scents and sounds to the top of the mountain. It is time to live.

Our suites are located on the forested slope of the Tahko mountain – at the edge of the vastness, by the most astonishing views in the region. Break Sokos Hotel Bomba is an exclusive spa hotel located on the shore of the lake Pielinen and part of the Bomba tourism area in Nurmes.
