Konnevesi Church
Standing proudly amidst the serene lakes and forests of Central Finland, Konnevesi Church is a graceful granite landmark that tells the story of faith, craftsmanship, and timeless beauty. Designed by architect Ilmari Launis and inaugurated in 1923, it is the only stone church in Central Finland built entirely from local grey granite – a testament to the region’s enduring connection with nature.
Located just two kilometres from Konnevesi’s centre along Highway 69 towards Kuopio, the church captures visitors with its dignified three-aisle structure, where the central nave rises higher than the side aisles. Inside, art and architecture blend seamlessly: the altarpiece “The Burden Bearers” (1950s) by Urho Lehtinen evokes quiet strength and compassion, while Lehtinen’s paintings of the Ten Commandments adorn the balcony railings. Sculptor Pauli Koskinen’s reliefs depicting local trades and livelihoods add a distinctive touch of Konnevesi’s spirit, complemented by church textiles created by Professor Päikki Priha.
Light filters softly through stained-glass round windows, and the two German-made bells in the tower echo gently over the village. Music plays a vital role here – the church houses both a 1957 Kangasala pipe organ and a 2003 Allen Renaissance digital organ with 50 stops, filling the space with rich harmonies.
After its first major renovation in the 1950s, Konnevesi Church was lovingly restored again in 2006, renewing its roof, electrics, sacristy, and facilities. Today, with seating for 360 visitors, it continues to serve as both a spiritual home and a cultural treasure, inviting travellers to pause, breathe, and admire the enduring beauty of Finnish granite and faith.
