Pieni-Selkiäinen Bird Tower

Completed in 2016, the Pieni-Selkiäinen Bird Tower stands within the Mertajärvi–Pieni-Selkiäinen Natura 2000 conservation area in the village of Särkisalo, Konnevesi. A marked nature trail leads from the information point toward the tower: first along the edge of a clearing, then into a lightly thinned pine forest. From there, the path continues to the border of the protected area, where wooden boardwalks guide visitors across the wetland to the tower itself.

The surrounding landscape is a broad open fen with partially overgrown water areas and a belt of downy birch swamp. The vegetation features species such as horsetail and clubmoss, forming a rich wetland habitat. The area is especially vibrant during spring migration, drawing in numerous waterfowl and waders. Breeding species include whooper swan, crane and several shorebirds, such as common snipe. Open-ground owls and daytime raptors can also be seen hunting across the marsh.
