North Karelian culture

Karelian culture is deeply rooted in North Karelia, which is expressed through its food, music, history and arts. Traditional Karelian dishes are a culinary highlight that offer flavors unique to the region.

Different elements of war history are also present in the region and can be learned more about at the local museums. Karelian heritage is displayed strongly in arts and crafts. Kantele or Finnish zither is a traditional string instrument also used in singing runes. North Karelia is the origin of the worldwide famous rock band Nightwish.
