Hugo’s Parsonage invites visitors to explore the captivating history of South Karelia in the heart of Rautjärvi. Built around 1900, the parsonage served as the chaplain’s residence until 1939 and later became the home of a frontier chaplain after the war. During the 1930s and 1940s, the parsonage was closely tied to Hugo Hinkkanen, a prominent local merchant and Rautjärvi parish’s financial manager from 1928 to 1947. Hugo’s shop was located about 400 meters from the parsonage, making him a key figure in the community.

The parsonage played a significant role during Finland’s wartime history. During the Interim Peace, it served as the base for the Vehniäinen Intelligence Unit, and at the start of the Continuation War, it housed the headquarters of the 18th Division’s 27th Infantry Company. The grounds still bear traces of wartime history, such as tent foundations, a cellar built in 1942, and a wartime sauna. The parsonage and its outbuildings, including a barn and woodshed, form a charming historical ensemble steeped in tradition.

Opening in summer 2025, the exhibition at Hugo’s Parsonage brings its rich history to life. This narrative experience highlights the parsonage’s role during Hugo Hinkkanen’s era, its wartime significance, and its post-war use by the frontier chaplain. Hugo’s dual role as a merchant and financial manager uniquely ties the parsonage’s everyday life to the broader historical context of the frontier region.
