The city began to emerge in the late 15th century. At the time of the construction of Olavinlinna, castle builders, artisans and other people employed by the fortress came to the area. The settlement was established, and in 1639 Pietari Brahe founded the city of Savonlinna. In the vicinity of Olavinlinna, Linnankatu (Castle street) became the city’s finest residential area in the 19th century. Its cross-street Eerikinkatu was also called Pariisinkatu (Parisian street). Linnankatu is the oldest street in Savonlinna.

Today, the idyllic old town is a prestigious residential area that charms with park streets and old wooden houses. The tourist can also enjoy the unique atmosphere of the area in several restaurants, galleries and each other in the most charming artisan boutiques. Wanha Savonlinna’s range of services expands during the summer when summer restaurants open their doors and fill the old town with a wonderful bustle. In July, Linnankatu 13 will open the Gallery when the permanent residents of the house, ie the kindergarten, move on to earn a well-deserved summer vacation. There are artisan shops in Putka and the house of Heltimoinen on Linnankatu all year round, as well as the Hotel and Café-Restaurant Saima and the Saimatalo shop right on the corner of “Parisian street”.
