The Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra is Matthew Halls. In this position, Halls follows the Finnish conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali, who was in the completion of his 10-years term in 2023 nominated as the Honorary Conductor.
TPO’s winter season comprises weekly symphony concerts on Fridays and a chamber music series, titled Afternoon of Fauns, held on one Sunday afternoon each month. The orchestra also serves as an opera and ballet orchestra during the season. TPO’s Park concert in the Sorsapuisto park in August is an annual tradition to many locals.
Founded in 1930, and maintained since 1947 by the City of Tampere, the orchestra has built up its initial reputation for competence as a professional orchestra. Today, it is a versatile orchestra also known for boundary-breaking productions, such as arena gigs with the legendary Finnish rock band Eppu Normaali, not to mention recording sessions and the concert with the famous American rock guitarist and composer Steve Vai.
TPO performs in Tampere Hall, which is the biggest concert hall in the Nordics with a seating capacity of 1,800 in the Main Auditorium. Tampere Hall is Finland’s first carbon-neutral congress and concert center. Its doors are open to everyone and the facilities are accessible.
