As late as the early 1980s, the Kärkiniemi area was still being ploughed and the fire-rich soil was still being used to grow turnips.

Today, a forest of spruce and birch, grown from the birch bush, surrounds the Kärkiniemi cottage. From the yard, golden with the setting sun, the view stretches across the large lake shore to Vihtaniemi, and from the islands even further away towards Tuusniemi.
