Church Stones (literal translation from Finnish “Kirkkokivet”) are huge boulders located in Otava, Mikkeli. These 12 and 18 meters high rocks are over 10,000 years old, and since 1992 they have been declared a natural monument protected by the Nature Conservation Act.

The name of the stones is believed to originate from their unusual shape that resembles church hall. According to the local folklore, the stones were used as a sacrificial spot during pagan times. The caves between the stones also provided shelter to locals during the Cudgel War.

Next to the boulder is a camp fire spot and a guestbook where visitors can leave their names. Firewood is also available.

The easiest way to the Church Stones from Mikkeli is along the Lahdentie road. Travelers wishing to visit the stones should take exit 22 from Lahdentie to Tikkalantie road. Following the signposts, after about 6 km from the exit there is a parking lot for visitors. From the parking there is an approximately one kilometer long footpath to the Church Stones.
