Arctic Lakeland Finland in the northern part of Lakeland is a place full of peaceful forests, clear lakes, and wild nature. It’s perfect for anyone who wants to relax, explore, or enjoy the outdoors. The national parks here are quiet and beautiful, and still a bit of a secret. Whether it’s the ancient gorge of Hiidenportti, the canyon lake of Julma-Ölkky in Hossa, or the soft beaches and mires of Tiilikkajärvi, each park reveals a different side of Finland’s northern wilds.
Here are some of the best places to enjoy nature in Arctic Lakeland.

Hossa National Park
Hossa is a dream for hikers, bikers, paddlers, and nature lovers. The pine forests here are light and open, the lakes incredibly clear, and the trails welcoming for beginners and experts alike. What makes Hossa really special are the 4,000-year-old rock paintings at Värikallio, some of the most impressive in Finland. One of the most famous places in Hossa is Julma-Ölkky, a long, narrow canyon lake where you can hike, paddle, or take a boat tour between high rocky cliffs. It’s a truly unique spot. As you walk by peaceful lakeshores and through quiet forests, it’s easy to understand why this park is so loved.

Hiidenportti National Park
Hiidenportti is the place to go when you want to slow down and disconnect. The name means “Hiisi’s Gate”, referring to the dramatic gorge that cuts through the ancient forest. This park is known for its untouched wilderness, mysterious atmosphere, and rich wildlife, varying from lynx and owls to peaceful forest reindeer. Walking along the moss-covered paths, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale. The silence is real, and it’s magical. This park is great for hiking, whether you want a day trip or a hike that takes 1 or 2 nights. The trails are peaceful, and you’ll often feel like you have the forest all to yourself.

Tiilikkajärvi National Park
Nestled on the provincial border between Northern Savo (Destination Savo) and Kainuu (Arctic Lakeland Finland), Tiilikkajärvi National Park is a peaceful, lesser-known gem that rewards those who seek quiet and solitude in nature. Established in 1982, the park covers about 34 square kilometers of varied landscapes, from open mires and ridges to clean lakes with sandy beaches.
One of the park’s highlights is Lake Tiilikkajärvi itself, a pristine body of water with small islands and beautiful natural beaches. The Venäjänhiekka (Russian sand) beach is particularly picturesque. The open fire place offers a perfect rest stop for hikers or even a quiet swim in summer. The name is related to the year 1595 Treaty of Teusina, which divided Sweden and Russia. An older border stone in Lake Tiilikkajärvi still bears a crown and a cross symbolising these two countries.
Tiilikkajärvi is known for its excellent hiking routes, including the 18 km Tiilikan kierto trail, which loops through forests, across marshes, and along lakeshores. It’s a moderate hike with rewarding views and a true feeling of remoteness.
Birdwatchers will also feel at home here. The mires provide ideal nesting areas for species such as cranes, whooper swans, and various waders. Autumn brings a colourful transformation to the park, making it a stunning destination for photography and peaceful nature walks.
